Pousada
A pousada is Brazil's small guesthouse, and it is an official category, not a marketing word: the Ministry of Tourism's SBClass system, created by Portaria 100 of 2011, lists the pousada as one of seven types of lodging, next to the hotel, resort, hotel fazenda, historic hotel, flat and cama e café, and can rate it from one to five stars. Joining SBClass is voluntary, so the stars you see on a booking site are not necessarily the official ones. This guide covers 359 pousadas in 70 destinations across the country. Fernando de Noronha leads with 29, which suits an island where every visitor also pays the daily environmental preservation fee set by the island's administration. Florianópolis follows with 23, then Abadia de Goiás (20), Serra Negra (17), Anápolis (11) and Aracaju (10); Campinas and Natal have 9 each, Recife, Maceió and Santarém 8. On the coast I would pick the pousada for its exact position on the beach, since a few hundred metres change everything when you are on foot. Under SBClass, each extra star adds required services on top of minimum standards for infrastructure, service and sustainability.
